河崎工房織教室
京都アメリカ大学コンソーシアムのCIP(コミュニティ参加プロジェクト）というプログラムから2023年2月より留学生を受け入れています。このプログラムは以下の通りです。
KCJS 体験の重要な部分である CIP は、大学生のクラブに参加したり、伝統芸術のレッスンを受けたり、地元の組織でボランティアをしたり、その他多くのオプションや、教室を超えて学ぶ機会を提供します。
KCJS は、1989 年の秋にアメリカの 9 大学のコンソーシアムとして京都日本研究センターとして始まりました。 2006 年に京都日本研究コンソーシアムに名前を変更し、現在は 13 の会員機関で構成されています。
KCJSは、コロンビア大学学部グローバルエンゲージメントセンターと京都に拠点を置くフルタイムスタッフによって共同運営されています。
KCJSは、毎期平均30人の学生の「ホーム」として、京都のさまざまなとのプログラムの深く有意義なつながりを活用できる、最適で文化的に豊かな学習環境を学生に提供することに誇りを持っています。午前中は、日本語2年生から4年生以上のレベルに応じた日本語の集中授業が行われます。午後の選択科目の学習は、学生自身の興味や専門分野を探究したり、校外学習を通じて京都の生活を体験したり、地元の日本人学生と友達になったりする機会となります。 学年度中、資格のある同志社大学と京都大学の学生は、KCJS講師が指導する午後の選択コースに単位を登録することができます。
小規模なプログラムの中で、KCJS の学生はお互い、そしてスタッフ/教員と強い絆を築くことができます。
さらに、プログラム修了後は、1,600 名を超える KCJS 同窓生のネットワークの一員となることができます。KCJS の卒業生は幅広い分野に参入しており、その多くは学部を卒業し、多くの場合は大学院または専門的な研究を終えた後、世界中を冒険しています。
学生たちは、同窓会のパネルディスカッションやKCJSのスタッフを通じて、学生たちとつながりを築くことができます 。
KCJS加盟機関は、

Anisa Khatana: Weaving Lessons

Thanks to Professor Rinne and Nakata-sensei’s research and support, I had the opportunity to takelessons from Kawasaki-sensei, a weaving teacher, obi weaver, and contemporary artist based near Kitaoji station. Once a week, I took the train to Kawasaki-sensei’s classroom and spent around 5-6 hours (including a break for tea, coffee, and sweets!) learning two styles of hand-weaving called hiraori and tsudzureori (tapestry weaving), typically alongside one to three other private students.
My time in Kawasaki-sensei’s classroom has been an experience that I’ll treasure forever. When I met him, I had never touched a loom—and in the weeks that followed, I prepared and hand-wove hiraori scarves and samples as well as a tapestry-weave genkan mat that I designed with a little sketch. I’m incredibly grateful for the time I got to spend with the loom, but I’m equally if not more grateful for the personal connections that I made over the weeks. Assimilating and becoming comfortable in the classroom was a slow process—we communicated exclusively in Japanese, I was the only foreigner, and everyone was at least ten years older than me—but deeply rewarding even in the most subtle ways.
Kawasaki-sensei, his wife, and his other students are all lovely people who have repeatedly amazed me with their dedication, knowledge, and kindness. To future students—if you’re someone who feels drawn to fiber arts, this is your sign to pursue that interest in Kyoto. If that’s not you—don’t let fear of discomfort and uncertainty keep you from what could be an incredible experience! Keep an open mind, be genuine and thoughtful, and do your best—the rest will come with time.
リンネ先生と中田先生の研究とサポートのおかげで、私は北大路駅近くを拠点に活動する織物教師、帯織り家、現代アーティストである河崎先生からレッスンを受ける機会がありました。 週に一度、電車に乗って河崎先生の教室に通って、約5〜6時間（お茶、コーヒー、お菓子の休憩も含む！）かけて、平織りとつづれ織り（タペストリー織り）と呼ばれる2つのスタイルの手織りを学びました。 他の1〜3人の私立学生と一緒に。
河崎先生の教室で過ごした時間は、私にとって一生の宝物です。 彼に会ったとき、私は織機に触れたことはありませんでした。そして、その後の数週間で、私は平織のスカーフやサンプル、そして少しのスケッチをもとにデザインしたタペストリー織りの玄関マットを準備して手織りしました。 織機と一緒に過ごすことができた時間には非常に感謝していますが、数週間にわたって築いた個人的なつながりにも同じくらい、あるいはそれ以上に感謝しています。 教室に同化し、快適になるまでには時間がかかりました。コミュニケーションはもっぱら日本語で行い、外国人は私だけで、全員が私より少なくとも 10 歳以上年上でした。しかし、最も微妙な点でも大きなやりがいがありました。

Jasmine Chen: Weaving

In my weaving lessons with Haruki and Yuri Kawasaki in Kyoto, Japan (filled with a rich textile art history) I practiced the use of a four-treadle floor loom, learning to measure and prepare threads, design intricate patterns, and weave consistently structured pieces. I made beautiful, vibrant scarves (they are my absolute favorite and often receive compliments), along with a glove, pouches, and a shining, fiber-optic headpiece designed to pair with my future ceramic sculptures.
As an advice, communication and comfort is a common concern in CIP activities: learn to observe. I gained a lot from watching Kawasaki sensei and fellow students, understanding their hand movements and thread handling techniques. The Kawasakis, with their generous, humorous, and patient nature, are fantastic to work with and are very open and supportive to artistic project ideas. Take your time to develop your own way of interacting with them.
日本の京都での河崎晴生さんとゆりさんの織りレッスン（豊富な織物芸術の歴史が詰まっています）では、4足踏み床織機の使い方を練習し、糸の測定と準備、複雑なパターンのデザイン、一貫した構造の作品の織り方を学びました。 私は、美しく鮮やかなスカーフ (私の絶対的なお気に入りで、よく褒められます) と、将来のセラミック彫刻と組み合わせるためにデザインされた、手袋、ポーチ、輝く光ファイバーのヘッドピースを作りました。
アドバイスとして、コミュニケーションと快適さは CIP 活動における共通の関心事であり、観察することを学びます。 河崎先生や仲間たちの様子を見て、彼らの手の動きや糸さばきのテクニックを理解することで多くのことを学びました。 寛大でユーモアがあり忍耐強い性格の河崎夫妻は、一緒に仕事をするのが素晴らしく、芸術的なプロジェクトのアイデアに対して非常にオープンで協力的です。 時間をかけて彼らと対話する独自の方法を開発してください。

I did my CIP with Kawasaki-sensei, a renowned fiber artist in Kyoto, where he taught us how to weave in his studio. From scarves to mats, Kawasaki-sensei and his wife Yuri-sensei, taught us everything from the basics to more advanced techniques for weaving.
I spent ~5 hours a week with them learning how to weave and it was defintiely one of my highlights of being in Japan. Kawasaki-sensei and Yuri-sensei are probably two of the nicest people I have ever met; always showering us with compliments and spoiling us with snacks every time we went (they were indeed delicious!).
For anyone interested in weaving, textile, or fashion-related, DO THIS CIP!!! It taught me so much related to my field of interest while also being in a very supportive and comfortable environment. However, I do recommend anyone going into this CIP to do a little research into weaving related vocabulary in Japanese, as it makes those first few times easier and makes communication with the senseis smoother if they can understand what you are referring to or asking about. As I said, please do this CIP! And if you do, tell my senseis I said hi!
私は京都の有名なファイバーアーティストである河崎先生と一緒にCIPを行い、彼のスタジオで織り方を教えてもらいました。 スカーフからマットまで、河崎先生と奥様のゆり先生に、織りの基礎から高度な技術まで教えていただきました。
私は彼らと一緒に織り方を学ぶために週に約5時間を費やしましたが、それは間違いなく日本にいる私のハイライトの1つでした。 河崎先生とユリ先生は、おそらく私がこれまで会った中で最も素敵な人の二人です。 いつも私たちを褒めてくれて、行くたびに軽食をくれました（本当に美味しかったです！）。

For CIP I took weaving lessons with 河崎先生 and ゆり様. I learned to weave on the loom, develop my ideas into physical form, dye threads, etc. – creating 6 projects this semester (3 scarfs, two mats, and a wall piece). Having this time with 河崎先生 and ゆり様 has left me with much more than a new skill set – I have gained confidence in unfamiliar territory and have grown in my ability to enjoy the present. When I look back on this time and at the pieces I made I will be thinking of the laughs shared and enjoyment in problem solving that I experienced with 河崎先生 and ゆり様.
My advice around the CIP experience is to be as present as possible – it is easy to fall into routine and feel academic (or other) pressures but I think the CIP is a designated time where your personal growth and wants from study abroad can be centered. Also, I would not be afraid of the “boundaries” or “differences” (ex. Language barrier) you may perceive as hindrances to your ability to connect with those around you – showing up and choosing to be excited about what you are doing is enough to build meaningful relationships with your CIP hosts.
CIPでは河崎先生とゆり様から織りのレッスンを受けました。 私は織機で織ること、アイデアを具体的な形に発展させること、糸を染めることなどを学び、今学期は 6 つのプロジェクト (スカーフ 3 枚、マット 2 枚、壁の作品 1 枚) を作成しました。 河崎先生とゆり様と過ごしたこの時間は、新しいスキルセット以上のものを私に残しました。私は不慣れな領域で自信を持ち、今を楽しむ能力が成長しました。 この時期と私が作った作品を振り返るとき、河崎先生やゆり様と一緒に経験した、問題解決における笑いや楽しさを思い出します。
CIP 体験に関する私のアドバイスは、できる限りその場にいるようにすることです。日常生活に陥りやすく、学業 (またはその他) のプレッシャーを感じがちですが、CIP は、個人的な成長と留学から得たいものを中心に据えることができる指定された時間だと思います 。 また、私は、あなたが周囲の人々とつながる能力の妨げになると感じるかもしれない「境界」や「違い」（例：言語の壁）を恐れません。姿を現し、自分がしていることに興奮することを選択することは、 CIP ホストと有意義な関係を構築するには十分です。

For my CIP I took weaving lessons with 河崎先生 and ゆり様. I usually attended lessons once or twice a week and made items such as a table center, wall piece, and scarves. Each lesson usually consisted of chatting for a little, getting to work on the loom and learning new techniques, tea time with a conversation between the three of us (I was the only student for this semester), more weaving, and then another tea before heading out. Seeing a piece and a vision slowly come together was really rewarding. I also really enjoyed talking with 河崎先生 and ゆり様 as well as showing them pictures of my dog (ゆり様 loved those pictures!) and talking about life in Japan and America. This was a nice and relaxing CIP where you get to slowly make textiles and have some nice conversations.
I really recommend this CIP and if you are even a little interested, please check it out. 先生 and ゆり様 are so welcoming and sweet and even though it was my first time using a loom, they taught it to me in easy Japanese and were really patient with me. You also get to make some snazzy textiles which is a big plus!

CIP では、河崎先生とゆり様の織りのレッスンを受けました。通常は週に 1 ～ 2 回レッスンに通い、テーブル センター、壁掛け、スカーフなどの作品を作りました。レッスンでは、少しおしゃべりした後、織機で作業して新しいテクニックを学び、3 人でお茶を飲みながら (この学期は私が唯一の生徒でした)、さらに織り、そして帰る前にもう一度お茶を飲みました。作品とビジョンがゆっくりと形になっていくのを見るのは本当にやりがいがありました。河崎先生とゆり様とお話したり、愛犬の写真を見せたり (ゆり様はそれらの写真を気に入っていました!)、日本とアメリカでの生活について話したりするのもとても楽しかったです。ゆっくりと織物を作り、楽しい会話ができる、素敵でリラックスできる CIP でした。
この CIP は本当にお勧めです。少しでも興味があれば、ぜひチェックしてみてください。先生とゆり様はとても歓迎的で優しく、織機を使うのは初めてだったにもかかわらず、やさしい日本語で教えてくれて、本当に辛抱強く付き合ってくれました。おしゃれな織物も作れるので、とても嬉しいです！

For my CIP, I did weaving with Kawasaki Haruo and Kawasaki Yuri, a couple who have been weaving for most of their lives. I learned how to use a loom to make textiles out of wool and silk.
I think my CIP was one of the most rewarding things from my time at KCJS. I was able to be creative and get help from very skilled weavers while also having nice conversation with my teachers and other students during tea time.
I would recommend anyone to choose this CIP as absolutely no experience is required. You can tailor the experience to fit your needs. If you are more advanced, you can learn how to set up the loom and ask about certain techniques. Kawasaki-sensei has many books of his teachers work and books he was published in with other artists works as well.
I made a silk scarf and 3 tapestries, but I could have made more if I started with a more simple project at first.
If you choose this CIP, I would recommend you think about how much time you have in the semester. There is the ability to go 2 times a week for up to 6 hours each class. When I first did this, I got too tired and had to scale back. Do not be afraid to say no because you are not required to do this. But if you are really interested in weaving this is a great opportunity to go all in. Note that there is a fee, but half of it should be covered by KCJS.
CIPでは、人生の大半を織りの道に歩んできた河崎晴生さんと河崎ゆりさん夫妻と一緒に織りを体験しました。織機の使い方を学び、ウールとシルクで織物を作る方法を学びました。
KCJSで過ごした時間の中で、CIPは最もやりがいのあるものの一つだったと思います。創造性を存分に発揮し、熟練の織り手からアドバイスを受けながら、お茶の時間には先生や他の生徒と楽しい会話を楽しむことができました。
このCIPは、経験は一切必要ありませんので、どなたにもお勧めです。ご自身のニーズに合わせて体験内容をカスタマイズできます。上級者の方は、織機のセットアップ方法を学び、特定のテクニックについて質問することもできます。河崎先生は、先生の作品集や、ご自身が他のアーティストの作品集に寄稿した本を多数出版されています。
シルクスカーフとタペストリーを3枚作りましたが、最初はもっと簡単な作品から始めていれば、もっとたくさん作れたと思います。
このCIPを選ぶ場合は、学期中にどれくらいの時間が取れるかをよく考えてみてください。週2回、各クラス最大6時間まで通うことができます。私が初めてこのコースを選んだ時は、あまりにも疲れてしまい、受講期間を短縮せざるを得ませんでした。これは必須ではないので、遠慮なくお断りください。もし本当に織物に興味があるなら、このコースは全力で取り組む絶好の機会です。
受講料はかかりますが、その半額はKCJSが負担しますので、ご注意ください。

This semester I got the chance to learn to weave under 河崎先生. After learning to weave, I spent many hours a week working on projects. I had a lot of artistic freedom, so it would be great for people who want to create something in their own vision while receiving assistance! I had so much fun. I would recommend that those doing this CIP be explicit with the amount of time they are willing to invest from the beginning. Many weeks I was at weaving for 12 hours. I was okay with that, but it could be hard if you weren’t meaning to be doing your CIP for that much time. I will say you do have to invest a significant amount of time if you actually want to finish projects.
今学期、河崎先生のもとで織物を学ぶ機会に恵まれました。織物を習った後は、週に何時間もプロジェクトに取り組みました。芸術的な自由度が非常に高かったので、サポートを受けながら自分のビジョンで何かを作りたいという人には最適だと思います！とても楽しかったです。このCIPに参加する方は、最初からどれだけの時間を投資するつもりなのかを明確にすることをお勧めします。私は何週間も12時間織物に取り組みました。私はそれで問題ありませんでした。しかし、CIPにそれほど長い時間をかけるつもりがない場合は、難しいかもしれません。プロジェクトを本当に完成させたいのであれば、かなりの時間を投資する必要があることは確かです。
